1984 A commentary by Scott Sepanek –
It has been 2 to 3 decades since I last read 1984 by George Orwell. Many modern day social theorists (socialists) have certainly parlayed its tenets into a practical setting. That is to be sure. Actually, this coalition has used technology to far surpass what Orwell originally published in 1949. Now it seems his work is “after the fact” and ominously destined only to increase with severity and ill circumstances. All you have to do is look around you when the modem day “Ministry of Truth” (a true oxymoron if there ever was one) tells you otherwise. Of course most “proles” (short for proletariat) will believe the sanitized version of reality that is spoon fed to them. Amongst their “circus maximus” commercialized flicker-rate mentality, this is quite normal and apropos.
The three main characters are Winston and Julia (both pro liberty) and O’Brien (pro state or system). At least from Winston’s vantage point, O’Brien had originally been sympathetic to their cause. Winston’s and Julia’s thesis had been to help overthrow the government and become part of the “Brotherhood”. The obvious moral red flag should have been when they were both queried by O’Brien as to their proclivities to commit unjustified terrorism (intermingled with patriotic motives) that they agreed would enable them to overcome the system and usher in the brotherhood (hence the dichotomy of tainted values). The blatant irony being that they tried to maneuver away from “Big Brother” en route to the “Brother-hood”. At least to them this seemed to be their first duty.
At this point in their dialog to consensus with O’Brien, no mention was ever made of God…
Per Winston, it was just an incumbent moral duty pointing towards an ethical standard where the shift of power would transfer from the “Inner and Outer Party” to the Proles (Proletariat or working class). On another level Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia happened to all be in a dialectic struggle (problem, reaction, solution) whereas Oceania was in a perpetual war that alternated between the other two countries.
However, in Winston’s case, the more decipherable element here seems to be a reversal of this macrocosm to his microcosm where you have a reverse revolution in order to achieve peace and harmony out of chaos (id est Ordo ab Chao). Indeed, this is where humanism has failed the test over and over again no matter how noble its intentions are. The ONLY difference being in recorded history where we have the United States Constitution and the Declaration of Independence where in the Preamble it says: “We hold these truths to be self-evident”. Concurrent with this are ALL its Articles and Amendments.
The constant regulator however in this dialectic dance over the ages has been “might makes right” and the perpetuated knowledge that this process is never ending or cyclic in nature which almost everyone knows is the true definition of insanity – doing the same thing over and over ad nauseum while expecting different results.
Imbedded in this tale are your usual Hegelian players of Oceania (Big Brother/friend), Eurasia (bad/enemy), and Eastasia (dual bad/enemy). The synthesis being a never ending series of conflicts with Oceania and its two arch enemies (sound familiar??). The other corollary being that the rebellion of the “Brotherhood” within Oceania was needed in order to start this whole process all over again. Like they say: the more things change, the more they stay the same.
The curious irony being that the arch enemy of Oceania (Eurasia) spontaneously changed in a nanosecond to Eastasia (even right in the middle of a demagogues’ speech) where everyone did a “Doublethink” to properly adapt to this new dynamic. Of course the Ministry of Truth was immediately utilized in this endeavor to quell all opposing opinions.
Sound familiar?

- Ignorance is Strength.
Eventually, Winston and Julia were collected as enemies of the State, separated, and re-educated. In the most abhorrently literal manifestation of evil, it was like looking into the face of the abyss as Winston was tortured in order to be re-indoctrinated into society. This was done by O’Brien whom he and Julia had thought had been their moral cognate and friend. O’Brien however was an agent provocateur and the very face of Big Brother.
O’Brien as an extension of the State in this personage ergo evil personification was consummate. He actually got inside Winston’s head and precipitated his cognitive meanderings. The abject logic being (as in the case of integers/my rendering) where you have a set of positive whole numbers, a set of negative whole numbers, and zero (a complete unit or entity). Point being a “zero sum game” with the deductive rational that since you “will” belong to their party (power); sooner or later you will succumb. So why fight the process (?) Because in the final analysis your positives and negatives cancel each other out (equal zero). In other words Freedom is Slavery and Slavery is Freedom (Doublethink).
BTW, people have wondered for years who the “Illuminati” are when they don’t realize that it is entirely collective and right under their noses… The people who inadvertently ascribe to it usually don’t even realize it until it’s too late. Or, they may never realize it and operate their whole lives within its mantra or matrix.
Big hint: they are usually anti-Christ:
· one who is against Jesus Christ,
· one who replaces Jesus Christ or,
· one who usurps the power of Jesus Christ.
For further reading on this read Ephesians 6:12. It explains Big Brother without any hint of disambiguation. If a person doesn’t understand this – they never will.
As I read 1984 for a second time, it was the most chilling account of looking right into the machinated face of evil.
Without God (Jesus Christ) in a person’s life, it is easy to see how this could happen. Collectively in the world it “has” happened and it has been happening for an incrementally long time. As a point of fact in the story, Winston was asked in his re-education or “learning” if he believed in God. He mechanically said “no”. In this end Winston has become one of them. From that point on he was perfectly malleable. He was now an instrument of the system and totally oblivious to it (good virtuous intentions notwithstanding).
This dialectic “didactic” has been ongoing since the Garden of Eden right up till now. Except now, the overseers of the world expect to “close the loop”. You’ll get “Change” alright BUT, not the change you expect or “Hope” for. And it will not be something you can “Believe” in.
Or maybe you will…
The battleground is for your soul.
As Christians, God right now is calling us. As sojourners in a foreign and strange land, we are to come out spiritually and NOT be part of any world beast power system that has a seemingly benign symbiotic religious component to it no matter how good its intentions are.
